Mit (un-)menschlichen Antlitz?! 1938–1989

The publication follows the line of development of progressive Czechoslovak and, in references, world art against the background of society's life in the period 1938 - 1989, when there were two totalitarian regimes in Czechoslovakia. The annotated selection of works of art from the collections of the National Gallery in Prague is complemented by photographs depicting everyday life. Political posters and documents of various kinds are accompanied by period texts and reflections - from Heydrich's speech on the liquidation of the Czechs to the petition A Few Sentences. The publication, in which the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes also took part, captures the period of Nazi and Stalinist violence, culturally liberating the 1960s, and ends with the depressing so-called normalization in the 1970s and 1980s.
