Skupina Ra / The Artists Group Ra (Grafické kabinety)

Katalog ze sběratelské edice Grafických kabinetů je věnován Skupině Ra, utvářející se během 40. let 20. století z potřeby mladé generace nalézt svůj autentický výraz ve vztahu k předválečnému surrealismu. Publikace představuje kresebné a grafické práce ze sbírek Národní galerie Praha jednotlivých členů skupiny, Josefa Istlera, Václava Tikala, Bohdana Laciny a Václava Zykmunda, jež spojovala cesta poetického lyrismu a imaginace inklinující k abstrakci. První výstavu uspořádali v roce 1947. Jejich spolková činnost byla přerušena zničující situací ve společnosti již o rok později. Messages on the Present Hour (1947), written by Zdeněk Lorenc, are poems dedicated to the individual members of the Ra collective: painters Josef Istler, Václav Tikal, Bohdan Lacina and Václav Zykmund, photographers Miloš Koreček and Vilém Reichmann, and writer Ludvík Kundera. The Ra Collective was formed during the wartime 1940s, at the instigation of the young generation of artists and writers that sought to abandon their isolation and find their niche on the art scene, particularly in relation to pre-war Surrealism. The members of the group re-evaluated the appeal of the founder of Surrealism, André Breton, for psychic automatism in its pure state in art, harbouring instead the need to consciously exercise control over painting and to reflect on the fateful chapter of European history. The group was not strictly defined in terms of its theoretical tenets; its members shared the method of poetic lyrism and imagination tending towards abstraction. In 1947, they held their first collective exhibition. The next year, the group’s activities were discontinued due to the devastating social situation.
